Understanding Dementia

Dementia is a syndrome – usually of a chronic or progressive nature – in which there is deterioration in cognitive function beyond what might be expected from normal ageing.

While there is currently no cure available for Dementia, there are many ways we can slow the progression of the condition and improve the quality of life for people living with the condition.

Types of Dementia

Dementia is a collection of brain conditions that lead to a progressive decline in mental ability across various stages of the process. The boundaries between different forms of dementia are indistinct and mixed forms often co-exist.

Alzheimer’s Disease

The most common form of dementia (60-80%) of cases. The disease damages and destroys brain cells and nerve cells, which causes memory loss, personality changes, and problems carrying out daily activities.

Vascular Dementia

This is typically caused after a stroke when the arteries that carry oxygen-bearing blood to the brain get blocked. The lack of blood flow to the brain causes the brain cells to die, and can thus impair  reasoning, judgement, memory, and other thought processes.

Dementia with Lewy Body (DLB)

Caused by abnormal miniscule spherical structures that form inside of nerve cells, DLB leads to a degeneration of brain tissue. This leads to confusion, loss of concentration, hallucinations, balancing problems, and deterioration of language skills.

Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD)

FTD is caused by the progressive nerve loss in the frontal parts of the brain. It primarily affects decision-making, behaviour, and emotion, more than memory.

Living with dementia does not mean that someone’s life stops. There are many ways we can slow the progression of the condition and improve the quality of life for people living with the condition.

Impact of Dementia

Dementia can cause both short and long-term memory loss, especially in older adults. A person with dementia may find it challenging to complete simple tasks that we often take for granted, such as bathing, doing the laundry or cleaning.

The signs and symptoms linked to dementia can be understood in three stages.

Early-Stage

The early stage of dementia is often overlooked, because the onset is gradual. Symptoms include:

forgetfulness
losing track of the time
becoming lost in familiar places.

Mid-Stage

As dementia progresses to the middle stage, the signs and symptoms become clearer and more restricting. Symptoms include:

becoming forgetful of recent events
feeling lost at home
increased difficulty with communication
needing help with personal care
behaviour changes, including wandering and repeated questioning.

Late-Stage

The late stage of dementia is one of near total dependence and inactivity. Symptoms include:

becoming unaware of the time and place
having difficulty recognising relatives and friends
weakened mobility and an increased need for assisted self-care
behaviour changes that may escalate and include aggression.

Rehabilitation Programmes

We are able to support you or your loved one in keeping physically and mentally fit. We design specialised neurological rehabilitation for individuals with neurological conditions.

Our trained and trusted therapists will help support and maintain an exercise program as set out by together during an initial care assessment.

Home Care

Having help at home can provide respite for a family caring for a loved one with dementia. Our care team will help to provide support with activities of daily living, rehabilitation and engagement activities.

We also provide hygiene care tasks such as showering, dental hygiene, incontinence management, dressing and assistance with transfers.

Residential Nursing Home Care

In the advanced stages of Dementia, it is likely that the caregiver or family will need extra support to carry out day-to-day tasks. You may decide that you would benefit from a residential nursing home care to help you manage your loved one’s care needs.

Our seniors will receive specialised nutrition care at our homes, participate in recreational activities, and personalised rehabilitation programmes.
